For this week’s HTC One M8 AOSP ROM of the Week, check out Task650 AOKP ROM by XDA user Task650, available for all variants including AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, International, Unlocked, and Developer HTC One M8.  ( I have been following Task650’s work since the days with AT&T Galaxy S2 and I have to say he makes some excellent custom ROMs/mods.)

Based on latest Android 4.4.2 KitKat, Task650 AOKP ROM is a “special blend” of AOKP ROM with Task650’s personal touches/features added in.  Certainly, this is one of the best AOSP ROMs you can flash “right now” for the HTC One M8.

What I really like about Task650 AOKP ROM is that everything is working out of the box and super-stable including camera/camcorder, which is broken on many other AOSP ROMs “right now”.  Besides that, you get the full AOKP ROM Control Settings to fully customize your HTC One M8.

I didn’t realize it before but the HTC One M8 doesn’t have hardware keys, which means you can fully take advantage of Navigation bar/Navigation ring customization that will allow you to add up to near 12+ custom shortcuts instead of being just stuck with Home, Menu, and Back keys.  Certainly, it’s a lot of fun with the M8 in that area.  Also, lockscreen notifications are great plus the additional options you can choose from.

As far as CPU control, Task650 AOKP ROM uses TricksterMod app (which is my favorite CPU app btw) to control CPU frequencies, also built into the Settings menu.  The only thing missing I saw was music apps like Pandora not working but it’s easily fixable by flashing DSP Manager app. (and this is an issue with all AOSP ROMs for M8 so…)

Overall, I am really satisfied with my first “stable” experience on my HTC One M8 and highly recommend you guys to try the Task650 AOKP ROM if you want to jump ship and get with the pure Google OS.  So definitely give this ROM a go if you are in town and let me know what you think!

Download Gapps 4.4.2

Download DSP ManagerCredits

To fix broken Pandora, Spotify, or any other music apps, don’t forget to install DSP Manager!

To install, reboot into recovery, make backup ROM, wipe data/factory reset, install ROM, install Gapps, install DSP Manager, and reboot. (If for some reason you end up in a bootloop, reboot into recovery, go to Advanced Wipe for TWRP or Mounts & Storage for CWM, format/wipe /system, then re-install ROM.)  First time installing a custom ROM?  See How to Install Custom ROM on HTC One!

I’d really like to run an AOSP ROM, but there seem to be a lot of glitches still with them. And (I can’t believe I’m saying this) the Sense ui is actually pretty good! Until the issues with camera and sound are dealt with, I’m going to stick with ViperOne.

Also, Carbon has an M8 build now. I’d like to request a review on that.

I would just like to advise any one thinking of buying this phone should research that the camera has a plastic lens cover that scratches exceptionally easy and seems to be a widespread problem HTC want payment at the moment to repair mine presumably with another plastic cover. I have only had the phone 5 weeks. I look after the phone never put it in my pocket with loose change or keys seems unbelievable that a so called high end smartphone could be compromised in such a way, perhaps it would be prudent to remove some of the star ratings!
