For this week’s HTC One ROM of the week, check out the latest Google Play Edition ROM with latest Android 4.4 KitKat KRT16S and root.   This ROM is available currently for AT&T, T-Mobile, International, and Unlocked HTC One.

To install this ROM, you will need S-OFF to install the new radios.  Without S-OFF, you will end up in a nasty bootloop (yep, I tried on S-ON already).

The Google Play Edition ROM brings you the latest Android 4.4 KitKat in a true-form fashion, straight from Google, made for the HTC One unlike some of the other custom Android 4.4 ROMs we have seen lately (although I have to say they are also excellent!).

Camera on the Google Play Edition ROM includes PhotoSphere (so you don’t have to install it separately) and you will be able to use Google Wallet without any carrier restrictions on all AT&T, T-Mobile, International, and Unlocked HTC One smartphones.

Overall, Google Play Edition ROM gets much better battery life over Android 4.4 AOSP ROMs and if you need to have the official Android 4.4 KitKat, this is probably the best way to go.  So, if you are down with GPE 4.4, give it a whirl this week(end) and do let me know what you think!

Download Radio for Google Play Edition ROM Android 4.4

No Gapps Required

To install, make sure you are S-OFF first!!!  Then reboot into recovery, make backup ROM, wipe data/factory reset, install ROM, install radio, and reboot.   (If for some reason you end up in a bootloop, reboot into recovery, go to Advanced Wipe for TWRP or Mounts & Storage for CWM, format/wipe /system, then re-install ROM.)

Finally got it installed – but i cant use my wireless. everything I do results in “cannot save settings” or something. Cell data/voice works fine – just wifi.

TBH, I have not noticed much of a difference. The messaging and phone apps seem… limited.

For those having problems – its been said before – you MUST have the LATEST Clockwork recovery – the play store DOES NOT HAVE the latest – you need to go visit the developers site.

    Help needed!

I did everything what is needed to install this ROM but i could not install it and said there is no such ROM while i am sure i have it in my download folder.

I also cannot do backup anymore because it says that the MD5 file was mismatch.

Also i been looking for the CWM RECOVERY but there is no such thing for the international, the latest is but it obviously does not work for some kind of reason.

what can i do so that i can use my phone again?

        1. shuvo

download a rom n sent that into a pendrive then insert pendrive and open that file into recovery mod i hope it will work….

    1. Linfeng Li

What I did was flash the CWM with my computer, of course you have to download the latest CWM img file from their website, there is indeed one for international version.
The way to install CWM with cmd mode, you can google it.

      Good luck.

Sadly for me, this rom is not running so stable, so restore my phone to the original one and waiting for the official rom coming.

It was an uphill battle but well worth it. Very smooth very well mannered on my HTC One. works out of the box with my LTE data. If you want the PIE controls to work you can only use version 1.912 with kitkat.

  4. Eric

I have the AT&T version of the HTC One, but I got it to install the Google Play Edition of Android 4.3. The phone is unlocked, I changed the CID to GOOGL001 and security is set to off (i.e. S-OFF) The problem with the Android 4.4 OTA is that it does a check when starting installation and complains that my device is the “m7att” and not a “m7” Anyone know if that can be changed?

  5. Patrick

Worked great for my HTC One (Telstra – Australia) handset. Made sure I had the latest CWM and went through the steps for S-OFF and ROM & Radio install. All good.
Battery life was really poor… Overnight full charge lasted to only late afternoon…. However after after afew days and many more apps & services added on it has returned to the original battery life… Of lasting into the night.
LTE (branded 4G) in Australia worked fine out of the box and has huge throughput.
    Really happy with it.
Thanks for the tutorials and hard work
    You guys ROCK!!!

    Thank you. Great video!

After this is done, can you apply future OTA updates on this or will you need to flash new updates manually?

  7. Alex

Installed fine, but I get problems with Google Market updates, very slow (i.e. 15 minutes per app), some apps get error 941, some 921, etc…

  8. Stupid Bad Luck Brian

Fuck me! I installed it without S-Off. It restarted 2 times and now my phone is dead. No change to get into recovery-mode or any other shit.

Make sure to read the instructions first. This is no joke!

I hope there is someone who can help me.

      1. Brian

Nope. Can’t run into bootloader or into recovery. The phone doesn’t boot anymore. I didn’t even update clockwork mod. I’m an idiot.

      2. Nhat Nguyen

Hi, I was trying to root and flash Google Play Edition 4.4 for my HTC One and forgot to do the S-Off. Now I am ended up with boot loop :(. Can you help me?

        1. Jae

Is it stuck on the htc logo? if so hold the power button and shine a light on the sensor (the two black dots on the front of the phone) it will force shut it off. When the happens, immediatly hold the power button and volume down button as it will stop the boot loop process and will go to the recovery menu. Hope that solves your problem.

“Okay Google” WTF? Why doesn’t Okay Google work for this GPE on the HTC One? It’s almost like CM11 did something better than Google for a change. Is there a way to get this feature enabled without getting a rapid battery draining app? Thanks in advance!

    1. Craig

Oh, and I really liked the slide left for Google Now on CM11 too… The Google Now widget just doesn’t cut it for me. Any thoughts?

    2. Nakul Gupta

Make sure you chose English (United States) as default language under settings as only English (United States) is fully supported by Google Now.

    3. E. J.

If you gold down the home button and evoke the google now page to come up (the one that has the tabs full of info) scroll to the bottom of that page and click the 3 dots to the right of the screen. Then go into settings, tap voice then re-select English as default. When back at previous page tap offline speech, select “All” tab and tap your desired language, (English again, I suppose”. Back out and tap “Installed” the language you selected should be there, press to download, it should say “Uninstall” after it is done. You should be all set and have the active google now experience. One more thing. There is an apk, that I think will be necessary to download it’s the google launcher if you want the Google tab to be your farthest left page, if not, you can access the tabs by long pressing the home button. Hope this long winded explanation helps someone.

    Hi man,

I think I’ve unbricked my phone because OS can’t boot and ever it can, I have Google’s animation no stop! Could you help me ?

        1. dan

To everyone who is getting errors in flashing your roms installing 4.4:
if you dont have a unlocked hboot & custom recovery installed , install it or you will fuck it up!
if you install 4.4 without S-off it wont work!

you must use the programs fastboot & adb during these process , so dont delete these programs (you have them if you unlocked your phone hboot!!!

          Step 1.
Backup your HTC stock rom! (after unlocking your hboot and installing twrp , forget about the space its going to take , its just something you must have!
its no joke!!!!!!, im sure you are reading many people asking for help after fuking their phone and not realising that a backup is always something you need.

          Step 2.
Install the Zip file of the 4.4 into you downloads folder in SDcard! (if you get your phone unlocked & S-off) you would want to have the installation zip file already there ready no?) “TIme wise it will save you alot” , GF raged at me spending my time waiting for adb to push it to my phone!

          Step 3.
s-off <- if your hboot is 1.4 use "Revon" to switch to S-OFF , 1.54,1.55 use "Rumrunner" to switch it off .
please note that there are many issues having S-off and you are risking your phone… (so the risk is all yours, i dont take any part of blame here, i have had these issues like everyone and spent hours trying to fix this)

*** you must uninstall HTCsync app! on your phone before running these programs (not only on your computer!)***
many users forget that this stupid app on their phone also!
you must make sure that you do this in debugging mode (Developer mode) when the phone is on not in recovery! and authorise Unkown Sources in your Security!

concerning those who want to install the updated 4.4 roms you need to update the recovery to TWRP
please update your recovery to it by flashing it threw .fastboot recovery command!
make sure that you are not flashing it on TWRP because it will give you errors as does not preform all tasks that are expected to do.

if you have issues with having no roms to install because you wiped you phone and all you have is fastboot and recovery use the "adb push" command and flash the file to you downloads "sdcard/download/"

Concerning installation of the 4.4 after s-off is activated!
you need to wipe clean in the recovery mode the phone! so make sure you have the .zip file of the installation of the rom and your backup ready if the setup dosent work!

hope i helped many struggling users here.

I’m really confused if I should get this Rom. The two features I love the most on my htc one are the camera app and beats audio. I know I get beats audio with gpe but what about the camera app. Google edition camera app sucks

  12. Jon

    Hey Max / Dan,

Thx for those tips, I tried to s-off but Soju can’t turn it off even after 5 reboot and a lot of blabla…
Directly after rooting I’ve installed a custom ROM. Do you think this is why Soju can’t turn S-Off ?
I tried also to uninstall HTC Sync app from windows and deactive it from my phone, but same sh…

What should I do then ? Reflash the original HTC Rom, then S-off, then GPE ?

    Many thx for your help

    1. Jon

      Hi Guys,

FInally managed to S-Off… Just needed to follow instructions on RumRunner website which said to have no lock screen security enabled on your device.

      Thx for your work !

      1. Dan

No Problem, i dont really recommend this rom,
for some reason HTC Sense is necsessary for me to have in some applications….
installing this rom wasnt “enough” for me… (camera is not good… , some other experience issues…)
im running the AndroidHD 40.3 which i find more stable…

please let me know if you find a better rom 😉

  13. Jon

    Hi Dan,

Actually I had since 2 years a Samsung S3 running on Omega Roms, followed by a Nexus 5 with Stock KitKat. Therefore I couldn’t bear the sense UI with this first screen that needs to be updated with the various feeds from either facebook, news, weather…etc
So I went to what I know the GPE of the Nexus, which is very good in the sense that KitKat is super performant (except the camera) and very low on energy. Nevertheless, nothing is a performant and useful as the Omega Rom and I have tried the Android HD 4.06.1540.2 based on KitKat. But again, that sense was making me nervous. Maybe I should have changed it with another launcher.

One question remains here in this tuto, is that update of the Radio given by max, is it the update of kitkat 4.4.1 or 4.4.2 (which fixes the camera prbl) ?
if not what does it do, especially for ppl in EU ?

    All the best

  14. m

I have flashed this ROM and I love it. Any idea how to get 4.4.2 now? Think I’ve read in a couple places that the GPe ROMs floating around will not work on a non GPe phone (mine is ATT).

  15. Kenyon

I have installed Google Play Edition and it is amazing. But now when I update the phone to 4.4.2 I get an issue with downloading apps. It says “Couldn’t install on USB storage or SD Card”. I have looked this up and it says to find any smdl2tmp1 files and delete them. I have tried many different ways to find them but am unable. Can you please help me with this issue.

    1. Joey

I’m having the same issue. I really don’t want to re-flash my rom but I guess I may have to and avoid the ota update.

    2. Russell Middleton

Same problem with paid apps after the 4.4.2 OTA update. If anyone finds a solution, please post a reply 🙂

  16. RedSpider

Didn’t load onto my Verizon HTC One, even though completely rooted, unlocked and S-Off. Guess that answers that. Will we be seeing a version of this for Verizon models soon?

    Someone please help,
I want to update the rom to android 4.4.2 but than its saying: Instalation aborted. Do i need to install a different kernel or something?

i followed the instructions step by step. Had everything working perfectly, also got the 4.4.2 update did that with no issue. then updated all my apps, pretty much had the phone the way i wanted it. My battery was getting low by this point so i put it on the charger and left it while i was watching tv, probably close to 2 hours. Went to pick it up to take it upstairs when i was going to bed, went to turn it on and nothing. Its been almost a week and still havent got anything. wont turn on, no light when connected to a charger, nothing! Got the phone December 13/ 13. If anyone has any ideas please. let me know!! Hopefully no one else has this issue!!

I installed the ROM with S-ON accidentally (thought I removed it with rumrunner). How did you fixed it? You said you tried it with S-ON….

  21. Tony

HELP PLEASE ! I installed the Google Edition rom to try it out, it was nice but I like sense 5 a little bit better, so I tried going back with an RUU. Kept getting errors, wouldnt let me go back to sense ! I even changed the CID back to CWS_001 (AT&T cid). I did back up using TWRP back on sense but if I install TWRP, won’t that brick my phone ? How do I go back to sense ? Any help is much appreciated

    1. Tony

P.S. At the top of the bootloader it says:

  22. D.Gruesso

Hi all – I am currently using this ROM and love it. I am getting OTA notification for 4.4.2 update (which I want!) however, when I try to install, the installation aborts with error “this package is for m7 devices this is a m7tmo”.

I understand that the code in the update is looking for GPE HTC One only and since mine is a T-Mobile HTC One the devices are named differently and the validation fails (m7 vs. m7tmo). I understand the same is happening for AT&T devices.

    So I am hoping that:

1 – the author or someone out there knows of a modded update that skips the name validation OR
2 – someone out there knows how to rename the device from “m7xxx” to simply “m7”

    Any help is greatly appreciated.

  23. Stuart W

I get the ‘ol assert failed: getprop(“ro.product.device”) == error messsage on flashing

    fail, fail, fail

tried to delete the first lines of /META-INF/com/google/android/updater-script , but i cant get the changes to stick (using Windows) ….. painful.

  24. Bob

I just upgraded and got S-OFF with firewater and youtube just stopped working for some reason does anyone have a fix. I used the flash apk and it still doesn’t work.

  25. Dakota T.

Hello! 2 quick questions, is it possible to keep blink feed and still have this ROM and do the notification lights work properly?

    1. Chris C

I installed it and the lights work just fine but the videos after upgrading OTA to 4.4.2 videos don’t play for some reason. (YouTube- browser and app)

  26. Ihsaan

I install fine and then after starting up it shows “Select language” and after a few second it restarts the phone. So i guess its stuck in a boot loop? I’ve checked and S is OFF. Any tips?

  27. Vaan

Hi! I installed it successfully. Now I have a notification for an OTA update for 4.4.2. Can I do it just like that?

    1. Leon

I don’t think so. I tried it and then got all kinds of errors. Had to go back to using the ROM from this site.

  28. Mike S

I’d like to announce that I had followed all these steps and I have been successful with the whole installation. I’d also like to say that the OTA update to 4.4.2 worked as well. I was using CWM touch recovery. It seemed like it was stuck at ” running skin_fota tool. So I hit the power button to go ahead and reboot and after I rebooted it says that I’m on kit Kat 4.4.2!

  29. Filipe Bittencourt

    Hello there,

Do you know if in this stock rom we can have the following features still working?

    FM Radio;
    IR TV Controller;
    Google Wallet.

The first 2 features already works in Sense 5.5 rom from HTC thus I really appreciate if it works also in Google Play Edition ROM version.

I am afraid to update rom only because I do not want to lose these features.

  30. Kieran

My device does not have root access. I have checked with root checker and superuser apps.

    How do I fix this?

    1. admin Post author

Can you access your Developer Options menu? There should be an option to enable root for “adb & apps”.

  31. Youssef

Works PERFECTLY… Thank you very much.. I can even update through OTA …. This comment cannot describe my gratitude towards you.. Keep up the good work !!!

Does not work with HTC ONE X Intenational (GSM Endeavoru). When flashing got message: Aborted (Status 7).
I think, looking at the file “updater-script” inside the .zip it works only with the device: M7.

    So sad!

  35. IvIountainman

I installed this on my AT&T (straight talk) with no problem. S-OFF is REQUIRED!!! as you said.

I used another tutorial to maintain OTA updates to get Android 5.0.1 Lollipop
My phone is Unlocked, Rooted, Latest Twrp Recovery , and SU

Immediately after install it updated OTA to 4.4.3 then 4.4.4 AWESOME!!! Had it not been for you I would be chunking along on my original sense 5 and Android 4.1.2. You gave me the willpower to upgrade to 5.5 and 4.4.2 using your guide.

Now what to do to my new GPe
