For this week’s ROM of the week, check out CM11 with latest Android 4.4.2 KitKat for your HTC One, available for all variants including GSM international/unlocked/AT&T/T-Mobile, Sprint, and Verizon.

I’ve been trying many other AOSP ROMs in the last week or so but haven’t found one that gives you as much stability (with everything working out of the box) so I kept going back to CM11, which has already passed its M3 milestone (meaning it’s stable), and highly recommended for those of you who want to experience custom ROMs without bugs (or minimal).

With latest CM11, you will be able to experience all of the latest Android 4.4.2 KitKat along with the ability to install new custom kernels (that can give you new features like BLN, Swipe2Wake, undervolting and more).  Most custom kernels for AOSP ROMs are currently more compatible with CM11 builds so you may want to try CM11 if you are into trying custom ROMs.  For GSM/AT&T/T-Mobile/International users, I recommend teaMSeven’s CM11 kernel here.  For Sprint users, try Thoravukk kernel.  (Installing kernel is easy, just make a backup ROM before you install it in CWM or TWRP, then flash the kernel zip file and reboot!)

Overall, CM11 Android 4.4.2 KitKat is the way to go if you want to really experience custom ROMs so definitely give it a try (if you haven’t tried CM11 yet) and let me know how it went.  (And try some custom kernels too for more features.)

how come the size of this rom is so small compared to other custom roms???
do i need to be stock rom 4.4.2 to flash this? i am currently on maximus hd 32 rom

  2. martin

I can’t seem to get the radio to work for the att version. Wi-Fi works and so does everything else. It says my att is connected but only able to make “emergency calls” I did a full wipe and then flashed. I tried fixing permissions and re flashing but still nothing. Any idea why it is not working? Right now I’m back to using the stock sense Rom.

Everything works great! I am using a prepaid service, so i Did need to reboot with the sim card in and then i was able to change the apns to the correct parameters. Martin, I would check APN under Mobile Network to see if that is on the correct one. Love having my Google “stock” look back.

Because 4.4 KitKat is made to be lighter from google
so it works faster, compared to 4.1/4.2/4.3 which are bigger in size

Hi I installed this and it’s great, far better than the htc stock with sense 5.5.

However I am finding the battery drains very fast , like about half as good as before and the phone is only 6 weeks old. Is this the same for everyone else or is there any tips to improve??

    1. Oliver

When I flashed this rom my battery was draining very fast too. I looked at the battery stats, and found that the phone was awake the whole time, it never went to sleep. Using the privacy guard proved to be very effective in extending battery life. In the menu, go to privacy/privacy guard, and edit the permissions for all your apps according to your needs by long-pressing on them. You should safely be able to deny permission to “wake up”, “keep awake” and “auto start” for most apps. “location” can be denied for a lot of apps too (you’ll be surprised how many apps have access to things that are none of their business). These are the ones that extend battery life most obviously, but I deny a bunch of other permissions for most apps too. You’ll get several extra hours of juice this way. Now I get better battery life than I did with Sense 5.5.

Anyone know a method to root a HTC One that has Kit Kat already updated on the phone. I have searched all over but everyone who puts out a method for rooting the HTC One says their method will not work on a HTC One with Kit Kat.

    1. ed

I am s-off and running this Cm11. I took ota which upgraded me to Kit Kat 4.4.2 (Hboot 1.56)
in order to do this too, you will need to download “weaksauce” exploit. you can find more information on this exploit, over on xda forums The exploit is a 1 click exploit app that can be downloaded from the weak sauce page on XDA.this will enable a temporary root. after install, you will be able to use the firewater exploit to achieve S- off. you will need to do all of this using adb. over at the fire water XDA page, posted yesterdaythere is a great video tutorial that shows you how to run the commands in a adb.

  8. Mike

Anyone have a method of rooting a HTC One with updated KitKat? Every method I find says “will not work with 4.4.

  9. maulik

    Hey max,
In sense 5.5 4.4.2 update is available but I’m not able to install it as my device is rooted. Can you please provide the .zip file of that 180MB update.
    Waiting …
    Thanks for everything mate….:)

  10. The Stumbling Block

I’ve installed it, got eternal bootloop, went back into TWRP and wiped system, reinstalled, and still getting eternal boot loop. I’ve done this twice now. It’s all I’m getting.

  11. The Stumbling Block

Wow, that was a fight. Got it up and running, but it has zero… ZERO connection to mobile network. WTH???

What “nightly” did you use? If you used the link in this article, you probably got the Feb 22, 2014 nightly (2014 02 22). This didn’t work for me either. The Sprint CDMA didn’t work. (In my area, we don’t have LTE, so we are stuck with CDMA). I understand they fixed this on the March 13th nightly. You might want to try anything AFTER “Nightly 20140313”

Here is the link for the nightly updates to CM11:

I have NOT tried this yet. If you do, let me know if it works. 🙂

    2. Steve Aldrich

The issue many were having with Sprint was fixed as of March 22. I am currently using that Nightly with no connectivity problems with Sprint network.

So I want to root my phone for 2 main reasons, (maybe more if I learn about rooting) one, to remove all this Facebook, Google+, tuninRadio, all that junk, it needs to go because it eats up space, time, and updates. Two, to hack a game ore two because the odds are really low, and the other is just a P2W type (info stored on servers, not phone). Is there an easy way or a definite way to NOT brick my phone?

    1. Oliver

That depends on what you want. Sense 5.5 is pretty good to begin with, so I would not be in a hurry to flash anything else unless you have a problem with it. CM 11 has slightly fewer features, but for me it runs smoother, so that’s my choice.

Hey Max, I have been stuggling along with my Original Galaxy Note for too long now and am looking to change to a new HTC one. Unfortunately I am in China on China Mobile, so I need the M8T version. This of course comes without gapps. Am I able to root and install gapps on this version – NOTHING mentions the three Chinese Variants M8T (China Mobile) M8W (China Unicom) and M8D (not sure what that if for, possibly China Teleecom) ALL use the same LTE bands, but their 3G radios are different. I am worried if I unlock using CWM or TWRP for the wrong phone I will brick it. But I need a recovery in order to flash gapps – any hlep would be appreciated. Thanks!

Help! I forgot to Wipe data/cache and I tried updating it but it freezes.. What do I do?! I turned it off and it stays on the HYC screen but when I try to go into recovery it keeps on trying to install the ROM..

Its like you learn my mind! You appear to grasp a lot about
this, such as you wrote the ebook in it or something.

I believe that you simply could do with a few p.c. to drive the message house a bit, but instead of that, this is fantastic blog.
A fantastic read. I will definitely be back.

Hey Max! Thanks for the brilliant tutorials. I got exposed to the term ‘rooting’ just weeks back and could not restrain myself from trying it out. I have an Int’l HTC One X and work on a Mac OS X. So after a lot of errors and rework and almost bricking my phone i managed to unlock the bootloader, root the phone and update to Clockwork recovery
Once all that was done and the phone survived, i had to try to brick it again so i spent hours trying to install CM11 ROM on it. I would have preferred the CM11 M12 snapshot but somehow it just doesn’t get installed. Everytime i try it i end up with an error ‘Installation aborted’. Eventually, i was able to install the NIGHTLY CM11 12242014.
One thing on which your help is needed is the installation of gapps. I’ve tried several times to install the 4.4.3, 4.4.4 and even the micro version but have been unable to install it. I always end up with ‘Installation aborted’ error.
Would greatly appreciate any help on this so that i can access play store and start using the device on a daily basis.

Thanks again for the brilliant videos!
