For those of you who want to install a custom ROM on your HTC One, here’s a brief tutorial guide.

Step 1. You will need to first download the custom ROM you want to install.  These ROMs come in a “zip” file format (so DO NOT UNZIP them) and usually 1 large file around 200MB to 1GB.  Some ROMs may require you to install multiple files.

You can download these zip files straight to your phone or use your computer to download (as downloading on your computer may be more stable/effective/faster) then copy over to your phone’s storage.

Step 1. Once ROM zip files are downloaded/copied to your phone, follow Steps 1 thru 3 here to get into TWRP recovery.

Before installing a ROM, you will want to do a “data wipe/factory reset” by hitting the “Wipe” button. This will erase all your settings, apps, and app data (but not personal photos/videos on your storage).   I highly recommend using Titanium Backup app to backup your apps, SMS Backup & Restore app to backup your SMS text messages, and use an online service such as GMail or Facebook to backup your contacts.  Most online service providers like GMail or Facebook offer built-in ability to auto backup/restore your contacts.

*Optional – You can try installing a custom ROM without wipe, but this is considered risky and dangerous as sometimes the ROM may not boot.  You can make a backup ROM if you are going to try this route so you can restore easily.  Also, this can keep your settings, apps, and app data without restoring them.

Step 2. Once wipe is done (or you have decided not to wipe but have backup ROM), simply use the “Install” option in main menu and find the ROM zip file you need to install.  If there’s multiple files, simple install them one by one until you are done.howto-install-custom-rom-htcone-2

Step 3. Once done installing custom ROM, reboot and cross your fingers your phone will boot.  If your phone boots within 5-10 minutes you should be good to go.  If not, you can try re-installing ROM, especially if you did not wipe, try re-installing after wiping.

    Hey Max,

Did you mean to say “You can try installing a custom ROM *WITHOUT* wipe??? If you did then you may want to update your text below.

    Here is your text:
*Optional – You can try installing a custom ROM with wipe, but this is considered risky and dangerous as sometimes the ROM may not boot.

Thanks again for all your help/tutorials!

I need some help, I tried AOKP Nightly on my ONE and put the newest version of TWRP on it and for some reason I can’t mount my storage anymore. There is no way for me to transfer files with a cable . Is there a fix for this?

I think you should probably rename the thread, I dont think this work for NOOBS. If i have to check the recovery versions inside your downloads to make sure my phone is not getting dead, its not for NOOBS.

With 99% battery, I am stuck on this bloody TWRP screen. Without Mobile or wifi radios, this will take a day or die.

I know you are trying to help, but PLEASE PUT A NOTE AT THE TOP TO CHECK FOR THE TWRP VERSIONS BEFORE USING YOUR UTILITY.

Downloaded the new 4.4 from the link provided by your other article. Put it inside my internal storage. Wiped the device as you instructed, but when it gets to install, it says “Unable to open zip file. Error flashing zip.”

On my HTC one, all Roms needing me to agree terms of installation will not let me accept the agreements when using the volume buttons to navigate to agree. Ant idea how I can install them?

Hi I backed up my stock rom before I flashed custome rom but I decided to come back to stock rom. so I just restored back using that backup file. everything is fine. but I want to unroot as well. so All I did to unroot is enter the command
    ./fastboot-mac oem lock.

    it says Tampered Relocked.

Hey, Musa. Not sure if you figured this out, but I just had the same experience. Android Revolution install soft-bricked my phone into a boot loop.

Not sure what your firmware is, but I found a stock rooted ROM for mine (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2674222), adb pushed the file from my PC to /sdcard and — in TWRP — flashed that ROM. It brought me back to functional, though with some differences from my own stock ROM.
